Obviously the fashion style, music, and slang are out-of-date but the students interacting might be another story. Groups still exist among the crowds, but are those important today in our society? A good deal of the movie is consisted in the social genres of high school. From the jocks and the prissy girls to the goths and nerds, we all in reality deal with the same difficulties of life. Some not as extreme as other, but we all have our own experiences. I dont believe in having social groups since many people are judged by that, but if everyone was the same, life would be simply boring. Boundaries need to be broken in order to experience life to the fullest. Luck fully for the teens in the movie thats just what happened. I believe though at Prairie Ridge social genres are stricter more among certain genres then other schools in our district. Our school boundaries lie mostly in the rich community, so money definitely plays a role here. The preppies are your friends if you have the style and the right social status. While others are rebellious towards them since they believe money doesnt define a person, its the person that defines the person. But not everyone is rebellious, so I nicknamed them as in-betweeners. To me they dont care about the rumors or how much the persons father makes a year, just the person, or even perhaps their moral standards. Our interests draw us to each other, not by how we are supposed to belong with certain people. In the movie, the students put aside all their differences and decided to become friends and some even more. At Prairie Ridge some boundaries between people have been broken as well and became friendships, but nothing more then that. In our school society that is taboo. ...

Going to Elementary School, High School, and then right after that College was just a routine that was included in the â€Å"apart growing up† phrase. Little did I know that the so called routine wouldnt be the exact routine Id take part of in my life. After changing it up and thinking I may not pursue a college degree, my dad then influenced my pursuit of a college education. Growing up I attended Elementary School, Middle School, and High School, but after High School I ended up taking a year off and attending a Christian gap year program called Link Year. I moved to Branson, Missouri and spent a year strengthening my foundation and growing in my walk with the Lord. Little did I know that after attending this gap year program and taking a year off, that it would make my desire for a college education shrink. Why should I attend college? What was the point of getting a degree when I could go out into the world and work on furthering the Kingdom? Doing things that when I die would matter most to me. These were questions I would ask myself. I didnt think getting a degree would matter or effect those desires and goals I had or would put a limit on them. But wait, could they?Would I regret not getting a degree when Im older? Once I even hinted at my dad about not wanting to go to college and get a degree, he brought a new mindset that eventually would change my mind. My dad pointed out many things. For starters, having a college degree opens up job opportunities. I never thought about having a degree effecting if I could get some jobs or not. Adding to that when jobs see that you got a college degree they see that you were capable to take on a difficult task and finished it, which also will give you pride and self confidence that you accomplished something challenging. My dad continued to point out more reasons why getting a college degree was important, but these reasons werent necessarily aimed at the education aspect or job opportunities. Going to college and getting a degree allows us to meet people from many different interests and backgrounds. There are people from all around America who can attend different colleges, and you never know who you will run into and get the opportunity to meet. It allows us to grow socially as we interact with other people who are also striving to improve themselves, and it is challenging us to grow intellectually as we hear from many people with different beliefs as well as have opportunities to share our own. My dad influenced my pursuit of a college education. Now that I am aiming at a college degree, I will have more job opportunities to be a light in for Christ. I will have pride and confidence that I accomplished something challenging and can finish something that is difficult. I will meet many people with different backgrounds, and grow socially as I interact with other people. I will be challenged to grow intellectually as I listen to other peoples beliefs but also have the opportunity to share my own belief and the love I have for Jesus Christ. Generation X by Douglas Coupland Essay

Generation X was Coupland’S controversial title which was derived from the work of Paul Fusell, category X in 1983. In his interview in 1995 Coupland explained that Fusell’s classification of X category were people who circulated in rounds of money, status and social climbing that describe the modern existence. But looking at the Coupland’s novel, it is very different from Fusell’s work. The people he is referring to as generation X are the people born after 1960. The whole novel rotates around the contemporary society issues: love intrigues, adventure, friendship among other themes (Reed). These themes are not new since they existed even in during the times of great philosophers. It is for this reason that I think Marx, Durkheim, and Weber apply to the Coupland’s novel, generation X. Although the novel reveals a lot of friendship and love between some characters there is an aspect of social deviance developing between the modern generation and the past. Emile Durkheim is perhaps the most popular in the field of deviance and his ideas are therefore applicable in this novel. In his argument in the division of society (Huang 63), Durkheim says that differences in a collective society and deviant society contribute to the basis of theoretical framework which outlines reasons as to why people violate norms. On the other hand, his appreciation that deviance in most cases enhances social cohesion provides foundation for theories that examines why deviant labeling occur (62). During the 1995 interview (Reed 3rd par), Coupland on his side revealed that his novel wondered why his generation is being labeled as members of baby boomer when they are capable of thinking by themselves. The idea of social differentiation also seems to crop up in the novel (Coupland 67) hence bringing the three philosophers closer to the novel. In the novel, there are several generation; the first one is the older generation of Mr. and Mrs. Mcarthur, second is the generation X where Andy, Claire and Dag belongs and finally the generation Y for Tyler who is Andy’s younger brother . According to Durkheim, social differentiation contributes not only to deviant conduct but also deviant labeling in more differentiated societies (Schmaus 56). In the novel, which represents the contemporary society, this deviance conduct and labeling is witnessed throughout the novel. The members of older generational view those of generational X and generation Y as some how spoiled and refer to them as global teens (Coupland 48). In his theory about the relationship between the society and individuals, Karl Marx noted that the society is highly stratified because the people who worked the hardest were also the people who received the least as the fruits of their labor (Shlomo 152). Like in the novel, Karl Marx looked forward to a society that accounted for social change. Although Coupland and Karl Max talks of classes of people, the two fail to agree in their classification. Karl Max concentrated on the Proteliant or the majority in the society and the Bourgeois who are the minority. He argues that the former live in substandard living condition while the later have all that life have to offer (Shlomo 160). Coupland classes of people in the society are the older generation and the younger generation. However, like what is contained in Karl Marx ideas, the young generation belongs to the marginalized group with lousy jobs while the old generation view themselves as the think tanks and the wisest. The young characters in the novel try to pull themselves from the characters that belong to the past. Dag’s love interest for example always find herself looked up in the past without realizing what is happening in the modern world. Like the rest, Weber in his work analyses the modern society (Burris 122). He discusses the concept of bureaucracies which according to him is the foundation of social stabilization, cultural symbols and channel of good and services to the modern society (132). He points out that it is the charismatic ideas and not old ideas that change the society (133). But, Marx Weber also brings in a very interesting contribution to the novel, the issue of love and friendship. Weber controversial love life seems close to what was happening in the Coupland (56, 74,132). In his bachelorhood he developed a romantic interest with his cousin Emmy Baumagarten who lived in Strasbourg (Hoenisch 1st par). Weber’s love for Emmerling as he used to call her darling continued for more than eight years despite opposition from both families. During this time their love emotions were bulging with a series of letters and spent several days of their sweet closeness in poetry of string (3rd par). It was in 1887 in his second military as a reserve officer in Strasbourg that Weber had an amorous but not sexual encounter with Emmy (7th par). According to the novel, there exist a very big difference in perception of ideas between the old generation and the modern generation. The difference which is a source of conflict between the generations is what links the three philosophers to the novel. The questions raised in the novel are both relevant and applicable to the contemporary social life but at the same time they refer to classical sociological theories of the â€Å"primitive† generation. It is clear from the novel that each generation is faced by its unique problems which can be solved only by that particular generation alone. It is important to point out that in the increasing globalization and industrialization world of the 21st century the economical, political and sociological landscape is likely to suffer from deepening and widening class struggle. Whether primitive, revolutionary or reformist, the old generation feels obliged to address this issue. Ultimately, Weber, Marx and Durkheim each provided conflicting accounts regarding the ways in which the urban societies of their time was deficient, and what was required to fix it (Schmaus 74). The younger cannot bear the consequences of ignoring the wise ideas the old and it is therefore necessary to embrace unity in diversity while handling societal problems aiming at acquiring necessary social change and stability. How to Play Inflation essays The article that I have chosen to summarize was called How to Play Inflation which will be published in Time magazine on April 26th, 2004. I have found that when going on to www.time.com that one can read certain articles before they are available on the market. The article informed me that the government has confirmed that consumer prices have increased to an annual rate of about 6.2% which all happened in March of this year. The article also mentions how we consumers were shielded from this particular event of inflation. Some reasons why no consumers have notice this inflation is because that workers wages have not raised much and factory costs have stayed down. Companies have also received higher costs to keep their goods and products affordable for the jobless. The article also begins to tell the reader how to measure inflation and the process of which to do this. I have found that this article relates to microeconomics because of the discussion of inflation. From reading the book this semester I have noticed how the topic of inflation comes up more than once. As found in the book on page 12, inflation is part of the principle #9 for the Principles of Economics. Principle #9 is Prices Rise When the Government Prints too much Money. I feel the article relates well to this principle of economics because when there is an access of money and percentages lying around, like the article explained, then prices do rises. ...

First, it’s important to make a distinction between slang and genre dialect. If you’re writing crime noir set during the Depression, your readers are going to expect some gaudy patter about gats and dames and gin joints. And if your novel is set in the Old West, there’s going to be a lot of shootin’ and ridin’ and â€Å"pardner† this and â€Å"stranger† that. But you have to strike a balance an excess of slang within dialect will easily tip homage into parody. And, prithee, don’t clutter your medieval romance or high fantasy with feverishly filigreed language that would require subtitles if it were to be adapted to film. A more immediate danger, however, is in incorporating contemporary lingo or catchphrases into fiction that takes place in the present or in nonfiction about a current topic. Ten years on, â€Å"Not that there’s anything wrong with that† or â€Å"Not so much† still work, but they’re getting stale. Soon, they’ll likely be as irrelevant as those everything-but-the-kitchen-sink parody movies like Scary Movie and Epic Movie, where look-alike cameos of pop-culture 15-minute wonders pop up randomly, with hilarity presumably ensuing. Some years back, I read a detective novel featuring a black private eye in which the narrative and the dialogue alike were laced with â€Å"Aaaiiiiight† and other African American elocution. It was less annoying than you might think (the authenticity was actually refreshing), but the novelty was just that in retrospect, an ephemeral affectation. The medium for which you write will determine the shelf life of slang. Online publication can be almost instantaneous, but it lives on forever, and the slang therein soon loses its luster. Newspaper readers are more forgiving, because they’re consuming the paper’s news and feature articles in the moment, but a magazine article sees print up to several months after submission (and people are likely to hold on to periodicals than papers), and books and film scripts are written a year or more before they hit the shelves and screens. Some slang lives forever booze and â€Å"beat it† are each hundreds of years old and occasionally a slang term (mob, for example, or lousy) becomes part of standard speech, but be prudent about incorporating slang into your writing; individual writers who nominate rad or groovy for posterity when something with the staying power of cool is available risk distracting their readers with an unintentional verbal equivalent of a speed bump. Slang can also be misinterpreted, or may at least interfere with comprehension, as language shifts. The context will probably help your readers understand what you mean by tranny, but as the diminutive of transvestite overtakes that for transmission in terms of frequency of use, any employment of it for the latter meaning outside of a car magazine may elicit an interruption of concentration. The ubiquity of slang in spoken discourse inures us to it, but when it is sealed in print or online like a pressed flower, it may lose its bloom, so chill, aaaiiiiight?
